Nail fungus is a common condition. It begins as a yellowing at the tip of the nail and gradually goes deeper to the nail bed. The fungus will cause a discoloration, and sometimes a crumbling of the nail at the edges. It can affect several nails, but rarely all of them. There are a number of home remedies which will rescue you. These treatments need to be practiced for one to two months.
Keeping nails clean and dry is the initial but effective step
Nail fungus, like other fungi about the toes and fingers, thrive on moist conditions. Wash your feet and hands before bed. Dry them thoroughly afterward, particularly between the toes and fingers. Trim nails to keep them short. For the feet, change socks often and use a powder, such as baby powder or baking soda, to absorb moisture inside your socks and shoes. Throw away old shoes which may harbor fungus.
A menthol vapor rub application helps
A menthol vapor rub, such as Vicks VapoRub, has been reported to greatly help. Apply a modest amount of the rub each day using a cotton ball or cotton swab. This inexpensive treatment has been found to be effective by many.
Snakeroot extract saves the day
Despite a somewhat unappealing name, many have had great success with snakeroot extract. This item comes from a plant that is in the same family as the sunflower. Apply the snakeroot extract two to three times a week. This treatment takes several weeks.
Tea tree oil combats nail fungus
Tea tree oil has long been known to have antiseptic and antifungal properties. Use pure tea tree oil. Massage the oil onto and around the affected area. Apply the oil twice daily until the fungus is gone.
Apple Cider Vinegar is a good treatment
Leverage the acidic nature of apple cider vinegar to get rid of the fungus. Mix one part apple cider vinegar to one part water. Soak the affected nails in this solution for thirty minutes each day. When done, be sure to dry thoroughly with a clean cloth. If the fungus is on your feet, apply some baby powder after towel-drying to absorb extra moisture.
Orange oil drives nail fungus away
The power of orange oil and its antifungal properties has been known for generations. Use an eyedropper to apply pure orange oil between the toes or fingers as well as under the nails. Leave the mixture undisturbed for 30 minutes. Repeat two to three times daily.
White Vinegar is one of the best remedies
White vinegar fights the fungus and changes the skin’s pH to be inhospitable to fungus growth. Just combine one part of white vinegar with two parts of warm water. Then soak the affected toenail for 10 to 15 minutes. At the end of this treatment, rinse off the vinegar and dry the nail thoroughly. Generously sprinkle some baby powder on the feet to promote dryness. Repeat this treatment twice daily.
Garlic is a very powerful antifungal
Allicin and ajoene, both compounds found in garlic, have antifungal properties that can help treat toenail fungus. Mix equal amounts of garlic oil and white vinegar. Apply this solution on and around the affected nails. Leave it on for a few hours. Cover with some gauze or a bandage. Repeat daily.
Lemon Juice is a proven home remedy for nail fungus
Lemon juice has both antiseptic and antifungal qualities. Pour some fresh lemon juice on the nail. Leave it on for about 30 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water. Alternately, massage some olive oil and lemon juice into and around the nail area. Use equal portions of olive oil and lemon juice. Repeat this remedy twice a day.
