Beat Sinus Infections at Home

When sinuses become aggravated and infected, it is quite painful. This is a sinus infection where pressure increases in these nasal cavities from fluid build-up. There can be a loss of smell, a cough, a stuffed up nose all in addition to a painful swelling in the face. Home remedies can reduce the amount of time for the condition and bring symptom relief.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Sinus Infections

This should probably be your top choice because of apple cider vinegar’s many healthful properties. The key to it working is to use it as early as possible in the condition; at the onset.  Mix one-quarter cup of apple cider vinegar with two cups of pure water. Keep this tonic with you and sip it throughout the day. Another option is to mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar into a cup of warm water. Use distilled or filtered water. After it is thoroughly mixed, pour some into your hand. Close one nostril and snort the mix with the other nostril. Switch and repeat this procedure for the other nostril.

A Saline Rinse Does Well

An effective treatment for sinus infections is a saline rinse. If you’ve ever been swimming in the ocean or a chlorine-filled swimming pool, then probably the thought of putting something like salt in your nose doesn’t seem like a good idea. However, salt has good properties to fight germs and reduce swelling. Just mix one-half teaspoon of non-iodized salt into one cup of warm water. When the salt has dissolved completely, use a nasal bulb or syringe. Fill it with the mixture, lean over a sink, and squirt into one nostril. Allow the solution to go up the nose and down the throat or out of the mouth. Repeat with the other nostril. Use this several times a day.

Cayenne Pepper Can Do It

The active ingredient of cayenne pepper, capsaicin, can help flush nasal passages by inducing mucus to flow. If you have ever had cayenne in your food, then you know this is a potent spice. Some put a pinch of cayenne in their palm and snort it. Others might find this too much. So, an alternative is to dilute the pepper with some water. Then, using a cotton swab, dab and apply to in the nostrils. Either way, have a tissue handy or lean over a sink to catch the drainage.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Sea Salt Work

These common ingredients can work well for relieving a sinus infection.  Just mix one-half teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide with one teaspoon of sea salt. Stir and mix well into three-quarters of a cup of water.  After the salt has thoroughly dissolved, stand over a sink and use a nasal bulb or syringe to spray the solution into each nostril. Allow the mixture to enter and then come out of the mouth into the sink. You can use this several times a day, but overuse will lead to irritation.

Oil of Oregano Opens the Way

Many report good results from using oil of oregano to treat their sinus infections. Place a few drops of oil of oregano under the tongue. If you find the taste of the oil objectionable, then another method is to put some hot water in a bowl so that it steams. Add a few drops of oil of oregano. Drape a bath towel over your head and lean over the bowl to create your individual mini-steam sauna. Breathe in the steam vapors to clear your nasal passages.

Put Grapefruit Seed Extract to Work

Grapefruit seed extract, taken from the white pulp and seeds of grapefruit, is known for its antibacterial properties. Put it to work on your sinus infection. Just combine four drops of the extract with a quarter teaspoon of non-iodized salt in one cup of warm water. Stir until the salt has dissolved completely. Then, use a nasal bulb or syringe to spray the solution in one nostril and then the other.

Garlic Delivers the Goods

Garlic is renowned for its healing properties. Use it to help with your sinus infection. Chop or mince a fresh garlic clove. Allow it to rest for a short time, then optionally combine it with some pure honey. Spread this on some toast and eat. Many report that this clears their nose and puts them on the path to health.

Eucalyptus Oil is Effective

Bring some water to a boil and then carefully pour some into a bowl. Add some eucalyptus oil to the bowl and gently stir it. Be sure not to splash any hot water on yourself. Place a bath towel over your head to make a tent. Breathe in the steam vapors and allow them to clear your nose and work on your sinus infection.

Irrigate with Hydrogen Peroxide

Many have reported that this is an effective treatment. Just mix one part of hydrogen peroxide to four parts of water. Be sure to use clean, distilled water or filtered water. Irrigate the nasal passages using a nasal bulb or syringe. Spray the mixture and allow it to exit the other nostril or out the mouth. Avoid swallowing the treatment.
