Have a Low-salt Diet

To avoid this, do not add extra salt to either your food or during cooking. Our bodies need some salt — about one-quarter teaspoon per day. Most people have several times this quantity per day. Be sure to avoid highly-processed foods, canned foods and juices, and pickled foods. All of these have a high sodium content.

Reduce Eating of Sweets

Diabetes is a main cause of kidney failure. Excess sugar can aggravate blood sugar and insulin levels leading to diabetes or causing it to be worse. When you have a chronic kidney disease, you should avoid sweets and sugar so that your kidney is not further stressed by excess blood sugar and insulin.

Avoid Animal Fats

Maintain a diet of low-fat foods. Animal fats can cause high cholesterol. This can lead to vascular disease which will affect the kidneys. Foods high in fat also will have other traits such as reducing overall health, increasing your weight, and potentially high sodium content too.

Limit Protein Intake

Excess protein is another item which will stress the kidneys. High protein foods such as eggs, meats, and cheese should be eaten in moderation. Choose lower protein alternatives such as vegetables or fruit.

Moderate Exercise

A moderate exercise program is essential. Plan to do moderate exercise about five days of the week. Moderate exercise means doing brisk walking for thirty minutes. Alternately, exercise in a pool such as walking in a pool would also be good. Try to incorporate exercise into your daily activities. For example, walk to do nearby errands instead of driving. Take some stairs instead of elevators or escalators for the whole distance.

Stop Smoking

Quit smoking and the use of tobacco products. Find alternatives to smoking such as sugarless chewing gum. An even healthier alternative is to have carrot sticks, celery, or a radish instead of a cigarette. You will be healthier overall, and your body will thank you.

Avoid Alcoholic Drinks

Avoid alcoholic drinks. If you must drink, limit you use to one drink per day. Alcohol must be processed by the kidneys. Drinking it means extra work for this organ. There are other health benefits of avoiding alcohol too. Try having interesting fruit or vegetable drinks that you make yourself. Canned and bottled juices may have excess sugar or salt.

Choose Low Potassium Foods

High potassium foods are another cause of stress and work on the kidneys. Avoid high potassium foods such as oranges or bananas. Low potassium alternatives are carrots, apples, or blueberries. Sometimes salt substitute products are high in potassium, so read their labels carefully.

Keep Well Hydrated

Your body and kidneys need plenty of water to function well. Do not get dehydrated. Adults need about two liters of water per day. Stay hydrated by drinking pure water, suitable juices, and teas. Some water with a slice of lemon would be great. Having enough water will keep your skin looking younger too.
