The presence of fleas can give you sleepless nights. Fleas usually like to thrive on warm bodies and hence you are more likely to find them on your dogs, cats and rabbits. Fleas lay eggs usually everywhere and getting rid of them can seem to be a mission impossible. You need to continuously monitor and clean your house once you have eradicated fleas. However, there are some effective home remedies that will kill and keep all fleas at bay.
Dish-Washing Liquid to Trap Fleas
Giving your dog a bath with dish-washing liquid is a sure way to kill fleas. You can create a flea trap to keep your house clean. In the night place a bowl or plate in the middle of every room. Fill the bowl partly with warm water and add the dish-washing liquid. Place a lighted candle near the bowl. Fleas will get attracted to the light and will fall into the liquid and die, unable to get out of it. You can repeat this for four nights to completely get rid of fleas.
Make an Herbal Flea Spray
Flea spray available in the market have a lot of chemicals in it. You can make a spray with ingredients like lemon juice and witch hazel. This spray is safe for kids and pets. Vacuum your house thoroughly and wash all clothes in hot water so that larvae and eggs of the fleas die. Now mix a gallon of vinegar, half a gallon of water and sixteen ounce of lemon juice and eight ounce of witch hazel. Transfer this liquid into a spray bottle and spray it everywhere. Do this for five days to remove the flea infestation.
Salt to Get Rid of Fleas
Salt dries out the bodies of fleas. Transfer salt to a sprinkler bottle and sprinkle salt all over the carpet area in your house. Leave the salt for around two days and then vacuum the house thoroughly.
The Boric Acid Remedy
Boric acid works in the same way as salt. It acts as a dehydrating substance. Transfer boric acid into a sprinkler bottle and sprinkle the boric acid before vacuuming the house thoroughly. After sprinkling, you can use a brush to spread it and fill the gaps. Leave the boric acid for two days and vacuum again. Boric acid is toxic and should be used with caution.
Pennyroyal Herb can Flee the Fleas
The commonly used varieties of this herb that is used to get rid of fleas are the European pennyroyal and American pennyroyal. This herb is toxic and should only be used with precaution. You can grow pennyroyal plant in your yard. You can crush the leaves of pennyroyal till the oils from the leaves are extracted. Transfer the oil into a cloth and you can hang the cloth in areas infested with fleas.
Rosemary Oil Drives away Fleas
You can use rosemary if your house is only moderately infested with fleas. Rosemary can be used in the form of a powder, oil or even used as a rinse. You can rinse your pets with rosemary. The oil from rosemary can be added to the pet’s collar. You can mix equal parts of rosemary, wormwood, rue, fennel, peppermint and coffee and grind these to a fine powder and sprinkle all over the place.
Homemade Spray to Control Fleas
The benefit of homemade spray is that they do not contain chemicals. In a vessel boil six thinly sliced lemons, rosemary leaves and four drops of geranium oil in a liter of water. Leave this overnight and transfer the strained mixture to a spraying bottle and pray it to areas that are infested with fleas.
Horse Apples to Reduce Fleas
Horse Apples can be used to repel insects. Cut Horse apples and leave them all over your house. Ripe horse apples work better in controlling fleas and they work well even after drying out.
