Sinuses are the open spaces inside the face and around the nose. Their job is to supply mucus to flush nasal passages clear. Sometimes they can become irritated and infected. This means pain. Sometimes this can be just for a few days to weeks, but other times it can linger for years. The sinuses are difficult to treat. After all, they are an internal part of the skull only accessible through the nose. There are some things we can do at home to make things better.

Humidity Helps

Have a humidifier in your home, especially in rooms where you spend a lot of time. The bedroom might be a perfect place. Modern heating and air conditioning systems can make air dry. A humidifier can replace dry air with some moisture to soothe. It is essential that you keep the humidifier clean so that the apparatus does not simply become a source of mold.

Steam Vapors Lower Congestion

Steam vapor improves congestion and inflammation. Fill a bowl with very warm water. Drape a bath towel over your head and lean over the bowl. The towel forms a personal steam sauna. Let the vapors soften and clear nasal passages as you breathe normally. For added benefit, a few drops of eucalyptus or peppermint oil could be added to the bowl.

Rest Arrests the Problem

Your body can do much by itself if you give it a chance. Make sure you get enough restorative sleep. Consider having a day of light activity. Read a book or listen to music. Some light exercises, such as a brisk walk, for 20 minutes can help prepare your body for sleep. When you sleep, make sure you elevate your head with an additional pillow to allow the nose and nasal passages to drain.

Increase Fluids

Drink more beverages to increase the fluids in your body. Extra fluids mean your body can flush problems away with mucus. Drink extra pure water or fruit juices. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol as they are more dehydrative and can irritate sinuses. Alternatively, drink some warm herbal tea. The hot tea will be soothing for its steam while you are increasing fluids.

Wet Towels can be Good

No one wants to try to use a damp towel after a shower. However, here a damp cloth can be a good thing. A towel dampened with warm water should be placed on the face around the eyes, cheeks, and nose. The warmth and dampness can ease pain and bring relief.

Nasal Lavage

Flush nasal passages with clean, pure water. The water must be sterile – use distilled water. Mix one teaspoon of non-iodized salt to two cups of distilled water. Lean over the sink or stand in the bathtub. Turn your head and allow the water to flow into one side of the nose and then out the other. You can use a syringe for this purpose. It is critical to clean and rinse the apparatus after each use and let its air dry completely before employing it again.

Keep Away from Irritants

It sounds simple but just keeping out of harm’s way can be of great benefit. Minimize contact with people who have colds. Wash your hands frequently throughout the day with soap and water. Stay away from air polluted with cigarette smoke or excessive cologne. If you have allergies, avoid the items that trigger your allergy attacks.

Cayenne Can

Cayenne peppers have a natural ingredient, capsaicin, which works as a painkiller and reduces congestion. Mix one teaspoon of cayenne pepper to one teaspoon of honey. Swallow this several times a day. Another option is to add one teaspoon of powdered cayenne pepper to one cup of hot water. Drink this three times a day. You can stir in some honey to the cup sweeten it.

Horseradish Healing

Horseradish can be used to stimulate mucus flow. Freshly grate some horseradish. Place a pinch of the gratings in your mouth and hold it there until the flavor becomes bland. Repeat this several times a day.
