If you have had the experience of an upset stomach, you know it is not pleasant. An upset stomach, also called indigestion, is often experienced as a fullness that comes on too soon while eating. It can also be painful, have a burning sensation, and involve nausea. This common issue has many ways to be addressed.

Pace Yourself While Eating

Eating too quickly can cause indigestion. So, pace yourself while eating. Chew your food thoroughly and slowly. Savor your meal instead of inhaling your food. This will give your system time to adjust and process the intake of food. If you start to feel the onset of indigestion, stop eating and slowly get up from the table. Stroll leisurely for a few minutes to allow your movement to help settle the stomach.

Watch What you Eat

Do not shock your system when you eat. Begin with easy, mild foods that are not spicy. Start with dry toast, bananas, applesauce, or rice. You should avoid eating foods that are high in fat, or of a high temperature, or spicy. Consume alcohol in moderation. This is especially important at breakfast when your meal is arriving on empty stomach.

Lowering Weight Means Less Pressure

Excess pounds around your midsection mean more pressure on your stomach. The extra pressure can make it difficult for food to enter the stomach. In addition, it can push stomach acids back up towards your mouth. Gradually reduce your weight to improve your digestion. Your stomach will thank you with better digestion.

Mild Exercise Improves Digestion

In addition to helping lower your weight, regular exercise promotes healthy digestion. A walk at a brisk pace four to six times a week will lead to improvements. Walk for twenty to thirty minutes. Exercise builds your appetite and prepares your system to eat.

Drink Fluids to Overturn Indigestion

Keep yourself well hydrated, especially if you experience vomiting or diarrhea as part of your indigestion. Drink pure water or caffeine-free beverages. Drink the beverages slowly. Drinking too quickly can increase nausea. If you have had vomiting or diarrhea, have some sports drinks which will replenish your body’s electrolytes. The key words here are to sip slowly and have the beverages throughout the day frequently.

Ginger Helps Settle Stomachs

Ginger has long been known to aid with indigestion. It has been reported as a treatment for motion sickness and seasickness. To use ginger on your indigestion, just simmer several slices of fresh ginger in a saucepan with two cups of water. Simmer for ten minutes. Let the mixture cool and then drink it several times a day. Add some honey as a sweetener, if desired.

Mint Juice for Stomach Health

Using a food processor or blender, extract one teaspoon of mint juice. Mix it with some honey. Drink this twice a day for three days. Mint has been used for ages to settle stomachs. Alternatively, consider drinking some peppermint herbal tea.

Cinnamon Solves Stomach Situations

Stir one-fourth teaspoon of ground cinnamon into a cup of hot water. Let it steep for five to ten minutes. Sip it slowly. Drink this tea two to four times a day for two days. As an alternative, use cinnamon sticks. Break the sticks up into chunks. Let them steep in the hot water for ten minutes. Strain the tea afterwards before drinking.

Fennel Seeds Fortify Stomach Health

Using the back of a spoon or a rolling pin, lightly crush two teaspoons of fennel seeds. Add the crushed seeds to a cup of hot water. Let it steep for ten minutes and then strain it. Drink this fennel seed tea two or three times daily for several days. You may sweeten this tea with some honey, if desired.
