Cold symptoms can be very frustrating and annoying. Popping a medicine to fight cold is the easiest thing to do but one does not realize the bad effects theses medicines can do to the body. Cold is a body’s way of killing the outside germs. The best way to deal with a simple cold is to resort to natural remedies. There is a list of things you can do to fight a bad cold.
Warm Water for the Stuffy Nose
Rinsing the nose with salt water helps to reduce nasal congestion as it removes germs that cause cold. Consider mixing a quarter of a teaspoon of salt with the same amount of baking soda in a glass of warm water and using a bulb syringe, squirt this mixture right into your nose. With your finger, close one nostril while squirting this through the other nostril. Do this at least three times and then repeat the same steps on the other nostril.
Take Proper Rest
When you are down with cold, you should make sure that you get ample rest. Your body’s immune system is fighting a battle with cold and hence you should not tax your body. Hence, getting proper rest is very important for a complete recovery from cold.
Gargle to Soothe the Throat
A throat that is sore from a cold can get some relief with gargling. Gargling will soothe the sore throat. Just gargle a glass of water that has been mixed with half a teaspoon of salt around five times a day for good relief from sore throat. As an alternative, try gargling a mixture of honey and apple cider vinegar. Steep one tablespoon of lemon juice that is mixed in two cups of hot water and then mix one teaspoon of honey. Gargle this mixture when it cools down for an immediate relief from sore throat.
Hot Liquids for Cold
To prevent dehydration and to open up blocked nasal cavity, drinking hot liquids is the solution. Hot liquids can ease the inflamed membranes of the nose and your throat. Consider making a hot cup of herbal tea by just adding a teaspoon of honey to an ounce of whiskey. Do not exceed more than this as it can inflame the membranes and do the opposite. This is an age old remedy used to fight cold.
Menthol for Stuffy Nose
Dab your nose with small amount of mentholated salve to open the nasal cavity. Menthol, camphor and eucalyptus contain properties that can numb and relieve an inflamed nose. Make sure that you rub this only outside your nose and not in the inside.
Hot or Cold Pack for Congested Sinus
You can either buy a hot or a cold pack from the store or make your own hot or cold pack. To make a hot pack, take a damp cloth and heat it for about a minute in a microwave. Apply this hot pack on the congested sinus and this will provide great relief from headaches and stuffy nose caused due to congested sinus. To make a cold pack, you can take a small bag of frozen peas or even take some ice and cover it in a cloth.
Extra Pillows under the Head
Try sleeping on as many pillows as you can. An elevated head is a great way to gain relief from congested nose. If the angle caused by many pillows is uncomfortable then place the pillows under the mattress and in between the box springs and mattress for a more gradual tilt. A good night’s sleep is also very important for the body to fight cold and to relieve the symptoms.
Do not Travel
When you are suffering from cold, it is advisable that you do not fly as flying can cause changes in air pressure which can damage the eardrums. If you are required to fly, then it is best to use a decongestant and even a nasal spray before takeoff and landing. Taking small sips and chewing can also help.
