Everyone wants to maintain a youthful look. No place is this more prevalent than in the face. We have often heard the expression “Put your best face forward.” This is why having a vibrant, young-looking face is important. Here are some steps you can do to maintain or get younger looking skin.
Be Careful of the Sun
A good first step is to take care of your skin as far as the sun. This is essential for limiting and preventing wrinkles. Wear sunscreen of at least SPF 15, and SPF 30 is preferable. Apply whenever you will be outdoors even in cooler seasons not known for sun exposure. Dress for the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Seek shade or stay indoors between 10 am to 2 pm when the sun is at its strongest.
Do Not Smoke
Smoking causes premature aging of the skin. Smoking causes shrinking of the blood vessels in the outermost layers of the skin. In addition, it reduces collagen and elasticity in the skin. The facial movements needed for smoking — pursing the lips and so forth — contribute to wrinkles. If you smoke, find a healthier alternative such as having carrot sticks, celery, or a radish instead of a cigarette.
Treat Skin Gently
Frequent bathing and shaving can wear the skin down. Use warm water instead of hot and mild soaps. This will avoid striping away naturally occurring skin oils. When you shave, use a shaving cream. Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing. This will leave some moisture on your skin. Use a daily moisturizer and ideally, a moisturized with some SPF protection.
Choose a Skin-Healthy Diet
Eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grain foods, and lean proteins. Avoid processed carbohydrates and unhealthy fats. Choose foods rich in vitamin C to promote healthy skin. Some foods to consider are carrots, almonds, oranges, blueberries, grapefruit, pineapple, broccoli, bell peppers, spinach, and kale.
Pay Attention to Stress Levels
Excess stress can lead to premature skin aging and other skin problems. Take steps to control your stress for healthier skin and mind. Set reasonable limits and make time for things you enjoy. Consider taking up yoga or Tai Chi. The breathing and poses of yoga lead to stress reduction as well as increasing health. Practice yoga several times a week. Be sure to get instruction in proper poses and techniques to get the maximum benefit.
Use a Night Repair Cream
Consider using a night repair cream. These products rejuvenate the skin while we sleep. For best results, choose creams with Retinol, a vitamin, a compound that is an antioxidant. Another good choice is a cream with hydroxy acids. These acids are exfoliants which will help remove old skin and trigger new skin.
Drink Water in Plenty
Drink plenty of pure water. Adults need two liters of water daily. Drinking enough water will keep your skin and body hydrated. Remember that water comes in many forms from fresh fruits and vegetables. When you are dehydrated, your skin will look older. An alternative is a green tea for its antioxidant properties.
Take Proper Rest
Adults should get seven to nine hours of sleep per night. This restorative rest will improve overall health and helps improve skin appearance. During sleep, you are healed in mind and body. Good sleep will allow the body to restore your skin’s health naturally.
Increase Your Vitality through Exercise
Get regular light aerobic exercise. Several times a week, perform some brisk walking. Walk twenty to thirty minutes. In addition to relieving stress, the exercise will have other positive benefits on your overall health such as increasing blood flow, skin elasticity and bringing a healthy glow to the skin.
