The palm trees dotting the coastal line of deep blue beaches and the crystal clear skies are a treat to the eyes of the beholder. Andaman and Nicobar islands is a union territory of India that comprises several islands nestled in between the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. This territory consists of two group of islands: The Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands.These groups of islands have more to offer apart from the sandy beaches. Some of the places of interest are listed below.
Situated in Neil Islands, Bharatpur beach is known for its beautiful coral reefs. This is a perfect destination for snorkeling. Neil island is home to a variety of exotic marine life. You can also do fishing here. Neil island is also referred as the coral capital of Andaman.
The cellular jail has a lot of significance as the remnants of India’s fight for Independence can be seen here. Cellular jail is also called “kaalapaani”, meaning black water. This jail was set up in the year 1906 and used bricks that were brought in from Burma. Prisoners were imprisoned here. Cellular jail is no longer a prison and now it has been converted into a hospital.
The limestone caves are found in the Baratang Islands. The erosion has caused some interesting shapes in the caves. Though there is nothing beyond this cave, the boat ride is a mesmerizing experience. Mud volcano is also situated in Bartang. A ride to the Parrot island during sunset is a must as one can see several parrots making their way home.
Water Sports Complex
This complex is for adventure lovers who are into water sport activities. Some of the activities offered by this complex are: kayaking, para sailing, water skiing and so on. The man-made waterfall is a tourist attraction. The boat ride from the Ross Island to this complex is one of a kind.
This island is around 50 km away from the capital and is the hot spot among adventurous tourists who love to go snorkeling and scuba diving. The island also has some beautiful sandy beaches like the Radhanagar beach and Elephant beach. Radhanagar beach was featured in the 2004 edition of TIME magazine as the best beach in Asia. Elephant rides are quite popular among tourists. There is ship commute available from Port Blair to Havelock.
These islands are inhabited by viper snakes and this has led to the name of this beach. The ruin of the gallows of the cellular jail are found here. The harbor cruise from Phoenix Bay in Port Blair can be used for commute to the Viper Islands.
Mount Harriet is considered to be the highest point of the capital. This place is around 55 km away from Port Blair and is an ideal place to go for a picnic and even for trekking. During the British rule, Mount Harriet was the headquarters of the Chief of Commissioner.
The Great Nicobar Islands
These islands are the biggest in the Nicobar group of islands. This island is home to exotic and diverse wildlife and is part of the World-biosphere Reserve. There is also rich flora and fauna. This island is only sparsely inhabited. The Shompen tribe, the most ancient tribe colony has found abode in this island.
Chidiyatapu is a mangrove forest that houses a variety of birds and is located in the south of Andaman. The forest guesthouse at this place offers a striking view of the islands.
