Prostate cancer is a type of cancer associated with the prostate gland of males. Women cannot suffer from this type of cancer because of the obvious reason that they do not possess the prostate gland. The risk of men having prostate cancer tends to increase with age. For example, it has been shown that six out of ten men diagnosed of prostate cancer are 65 years and above and the cancer is rare in men below 40 years.

Men above forty years need to be checked regularly

The progression of prostate cancer is very slow and usually asymptomatic in the early stages. Therefore, men above 40 are advised to go for regular medical checkups so that this form of cancer can be tracked at the early stage which will increase the treatment and recovery options.

Acinar adenocarcinoma occurs more frequently

The major type of prostate cancer that has been recorded in most of the diagnosed cases (9 in 10 cases) is the type known as acinar adenocarcinoma. There are other forms of adenocarcinoma as follows; foamy carcinoma, atrophic carcinoma, signet ring carcinoma and colloid carcinoma.

A number of prostate cancer types are rare

Besides the acinar adenocarcinoma, other forms of prostate cancer have been recorded. The other forms are rare with an incidence of less than 1%. The rare forms of prostate cancer include carcinoid, squamous cell cancer, small cell cancer, ductal adenocarcinoma, sarcomas and sarcomatoid cancers and transitional cell (urothelial) cancer.

All forms of cancers have a uniform treatment

Irrespective of the form in which the prostate cancer comes, the treatment regimen is usually the same. Surgery is usually employed to get rid of the tumor. In the less advanced cases, only chemotherapy may be used. The combination of surgery and radiation is to completely eradicate the tumor cells from the prostate region.

There are less frequent treatment plans that are used in Turkey

Besides the surgery, different other treatment plans have been explored for the treatment of prostate cancer in Istanbul and they are as follows: photodynamic therapy, immunotherapy, streotatic body radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, modulating arc therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy, gene therapy, image guided radiotherapy and so on.

Diagnosis of prostate cancer can be done in a number of ways

Like all other illnesses, prostate cancer can be diagnosed in the early stages if the right diagnostic technique is employed. In Istanbul, Turkey, some of the diagnostic methods that are currently employed span across Magnetic Resonance Imaging, PET-CT and computer tomography. Laboratory confirmatory tests like microbiology, biochemistry, endocrinology, toxicology and autoimmune tests may be carried out for effective treatment.
