It took a while before it could be established that mesothelioma was caused by exposure to asbestos. Cancers generally have not definitive cure. Some people get lucky and after a combination of therapies, they become free of cancerous cells. The term survivors are used to describe such people.

A combination of therapies have been developed to help cancer patients

There are various therapies that have been employed to bring succor to mesothelioma victims. Chemotherapy was one of the earliest forms of treatment used to assist cancer patients. There is also the radiation which indiscriminately kills the tumor cells and healthy body cells. New therapies that are more invasive and more specific are also in development to help bring total cure to cancer victims.

Alternative therapies are promoted ahead of mainstream treatment

The physicist, Robert Park, the author of seven signs of voodoo science explains that believe in other alternative ways of cancer treatment is sensible since these alternative therapies has endured for decades or centuries. If they were not potent, they would have been phased out naturally over the years. Alternative therapies are very invasive and can be a potential source of harm to the biological being.

Complimentary treatments usually accompany mainstream treatment

Complementary treatment is usually no-invasive, meaning they are mostly superficial and are used alongside mainstream treatment to manage the more serious cases of mesothelioma. Since they are non-invasive, they are inexpensive to be carried out, safe and their use is based on verifiable evidence documented over the years. Complimentary therapy includes all physical exercises.

Exercise that cancer survivors should do

ACS and ASCM in a guideline presented on June 6, 2010 highlighted some exercises that cancer survivors should be doing. They recommended that they do a rigorous activity five times every week for thirty minutes or more. Physical or aerobic activities that would last for 45 to 60 minutes are most recommended. If the survivor is sedentary, then they can start with 10 minutes of exercise and make up a total of 30 min continuously.

Lack of physical activity predisposes one to cancer

Although mesothelioma is asbestos linked cancer because the asbestos particles when inhaled settles on the lining of the lungs causing accumulation of fluid in the lymph. Somehow, the accumulated fluid leads to genetic mutation of the cells leading to loss of contact inhibition of cell division normal cells go through. Lack of physical exercise has been known to exacerbate the situation.

Energy dense food should be avoided by survivors

Nutrition has a part to play in the care of cancer patient. A balanced diet in general helps the body to fend off infection. It is better for a cancer patient to be as lean as possible but not underweight. Energy dense foods and sugary foods should be avoided because these classes of food help cell growth. The cells are already malfunctioning and you wouldn’t want to feed them further. Red meat and processed meat should be avoided as much as possible too. There should be a mark on salt intake because it does not go well with cancer.

Both complementary and alternative therapies promote behavioral change

The essence of these therapies other than the mainstream treatment is to encourage the survivors to have some sort of behavioral change. Even when survivors have been healed to some extent, things like exercise become a part of them because they have been doing it for a while. Alcoholism is also one habit that alternative therapy will encourage you to drop because it also predisposes one to cancer.
