Several insinuations have floated round about mesothelioma that some people now cannot differentiate the facts from the mere gossips. Once, it was rumored that mesothelioma was communicable i.e. could be transferred from one person to another through direct contact. There are other true sides to the story which is often neglected. Some of those very important facts about mesothelioma are as follows;
Asbestos exposure causes Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer whose cause has been found to be related to exposure to asbestos. In other words, those that expose themselves to asbestos are at a higher risk of coming down with this disease.
Cancer starts when cells start dividing uncontrollably
For growth and body maintenance to occur, cells normally divide. There is a mechanism known as contact inhibition which also puts this cell division in check so that the cells do not multiply out of control. When dividing cells touch each other, a message is sent that stops them from dividing further. However, cancerous cells have lost this ability making them divide uncontrollably resulting to a mass known as tumor.
Two primary causes of Mesothelioma
Like earlier mentioned, the main cause of Mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos and this leads to development of the most common type of Mesothelioma called plural mesothelioma.
It is mostly formed in lungs and abdomen
Cancers are mostly localized to particular organs or tissues, hence where they get their names from for example, cancer of the lungs, cancer of the blood (anemia), prostate cancer and so on. In the case of Mesothelioma, the cancer is formed on the linings of the lungs and abdomen and other parts of the body.
Symptoms: Cough, muscle weakness, night sweats, fever
A particular symptom may not tell you much about because varied illnesses may present a common symptom. This is the mere reason you have to go to the hospital for proper screening when you don’t feel alright. Symptoms of Mesothelioma include cough, weakness of the muscles, night sweats and fever. Most of these symptoms are akin to normal lung disease like flu which makes it more difficult to detect at a glance.
Patient survival rate varies
People have survived from it but the rate of survival varies depending on the location of the cancer and how early the disease was detected. This is the more reason why regular screening is important.
It may take 20 to 50 years for symptoms to manifest
It is estimated that after prolonged exposure to asbestos, symptoms of Mesothelioma would likely take somewhere around twenty to fifty years to manifest. This shows that Mesothelioma is more common among the elderly. The gap from exposure to development of symptoms is called latency period.
Men are more susceptible to Mesothelioma
Research has shown that men are more at risk of developing the disease compared to women. About two to ten percent of people that has a prolonged exposure to asbestos will come down with the disease.
Military, can paints, toxic chemicals are common sources
It is good to look at those that have higher risk of exposure to asbestos and the most likely source and they include military, can of paints, toxic chemical handlers and so on.
